“It was hard to avoid a “nerd” wedding, so we embraced it!”
Kelli-Anne & Silkie Price were married on the 1st of April 2016 at Crowne Plaza Surfers Paradise.
Find a little more about them and their special day below…
Tell us a few words about yourself and your partner and how you met.
We met as teenagers attending and staffing an educational camp for students interested in science. In many ways, we were high school sweethearts.
How did he propose?
Silkie planned an elaborate scavenger hunt full of notes and clues that led us to many locations and activities we enjoy together. It ended with us walking along the beach where he handed me the last clue: “There is more than one answer and you will decide which one is better. Your host will provide it for you.” I turned around and he was on one knee with a ring in his hand.
What made your wedding day amazing?
We set out to have a joyful, intimate wedding and that’s exactly what we got. Having our best friends and closest family around us meant we could relax and simply enjoy every moment. More than anything, I remember having FUN!
Was there a funny moment you would like to share?
We had two particularly funny moments at our wedding. The first was when my father presented Silkie with my dowry: a treasure chest containing sheep, goats and gold coins (complete with a certificate of ownership). The second was when one of my teen love letters was read aloud by my older brother for all our guests to hear. Being humiliated and laughing yourself silly went hand-in-hand at our wedding.
Did you incorporate any traditions into your wedding day?
We incorporated a handfasting, which is a Pagan custom representing union. We crossed and held hands to signify the infinity symbol while the groom’s mother bound our hands with a Tibetan khata. The fabric will now be treasured and used in future family ceremonies.
Did you create/do anything to make your wedding unique or show your personality?
Because we met at science camp it was hard to avoid a “nerd” wedding, so we embraced it! We had personal vows referencing pop culture characters, TV shows and movies. On each guest table and around our reception room we had framed quotes about love and relationships from some of our favourite books, shows and films. Our guests had a good giggle and we now plan to display those keepsakes like artwork in our new home.
Do you have any tips for future Brides and Grooms planning a wedding?
Find a venue and vendors that match your style, personality and budget… and go with your gut! You will never please everyone during the planning stages, but on the day if the two of you are having a great time then this vibe will catch on. Our guests have all told us they had a ball and it was like a big party – that’s exactly how we felt too!
Where did you honeymoon?
We enjoyed a South Pacific cruise to Vanuatu and New Caledonia
