I recently attended a very special wine tasting in Chiswick Restaurant at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney. This is my experience.
A thrilling wine experience
Wine Australia hosted 50 sommeliers to coincide with the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards held in Melbourne. Over 650 wines from 42 regions were showcased to the group, which included wine professionals from some of the best venues from around the world including; New York, London, Bangkok, Chicago, San Sebastian, Los Angeles and Yokohama.
The list of famed venues is created from the votes of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, an influential group of more than 1000 international leaders in the restaurant industry. The panel in each region includes food writers, chefs, restaurateurs and highly regarded ‘gastronomes’ (people who enjoy and know about high-quality food and drink).
Each of the 50 selected wines at the tasting in Sydney were put forward by a sommelier on this 10-day immersion program.
These wines were nominated because they excited and astonished the group of sommeliers, but most importantly, because of the thrilling experience it provoked while enjoying the pinnacle of the best gastronomy that Australia has to offer.
On this special occasion, Wine Australia invited influential members of the Australian Wine trade to appreciate and discuss the range selected by the sommeliers as their favourites.
Divided into 3 groups, ‘The Somms of the World – Inspired Tasting’, was a great representation of modern Australian winemaking and gave wine trade representatives a chance to try some of Australia’s most coveted wines – from the classics to the experimental.
