A Masterclass with Spanish Winemaker Telmo Rodriguez

Wine supplier Peter Rogers, owner of Naked Bunch, recently invited me to participate in a masterclass with Telmo Rodriguez at Kingscliff’s Fins Restaurant. This was the only wine trade event held with Northern New South Wales & South East Queensland venues.

A Mission in Preserving Spanish Wines

Telmo Rodriguez is a charismatic figure in the world of winemaking and has been recognised since the conception of Telmo Rodriguez Wine Company, known for producing wines exclusively with native varieties.

He rejects and considers absurd the entry of French wine varieties into Spain, and that is why he has worked for over 25 years to recover neglected and abandoned vineyards. This commitment to the local viticulture has allowed him to gain a deep knowledge of the Spanish varieties Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mencia, Verdejo, Viura and Godello.

The Wine Event

The masterclass was divided into a series of wines from Valdeorras and Rioja. On arrival, guests had the opportunity to speak with Telmo informally allowing spontaneous interaction and networking.

After the reception, we moved into the main dining room of the restaurant where, at a long  communal table, Telmo presented his most special wines. It was here that his words were filled with thoughts and illusions, as well as with questions without real answers.

He said that his relentless efforts to do viticulture on steep slopes, with abandoned vines, still makes him wonder, “Am I an idiot or a hero?”

The Spanish winemaker explained during his presentation that a winemaker must consider himself as an artisan and own the craft as if the wines are his art. That it is the reason why the bottles he produces under his labels are numbered, detailing the size and limited production, adding value to the final product.

“The consumer is protecting our ancestral viticulture in each sip and in every flavour that is in a glass of wine,” he said with emotion and unique conviction.
