The wine history of Australia is less than two hundred years and is short in comparison with the European. Since the first days of wine making, Penfolds has figured prominently and influentially in the identity of Australian wines. Without the influence of Penfolds, the modern Australian wine industry would be very different, as Penfolds has brought to the whole world, its great reputation of wines of high quality.
Founded in 1844, Penfolds has played a key role in the evolution of the Australian wine industry and throughout the world. The winery was established with an innovative spirit and continues the constant and endless task of producing better wines. This was how in 1951 it created ‘Grange’ and has been produced continuously since then, to be today the most emblematic wine of Australia and a world-class collectable item.
I recently had the opportunity to visit Magill Estate on the outskirts of Adelaide and attended a masterclass on Chardonnay led by Kym Schroeter, head of the white wine making at Penfolds. It is here where the historic centre of the operation is established and where everything began for the famous winery of today.
Kym joined the company in 1987 as a laboratory assistant and from here he worked in all production areas, before joining the red wine making team in 1995. Since 2003, Kym has been directing white wines and has been instrumental in the success of Penfolds wines recognised for their quality and style worldwide.
Having spent a day on the property and tasted through the Penfolds range at the state-of-the-art cellar door, I can truly attest the enormous talent, passion and dedication that the whole wine making team imparts to each of the bottles produced by them.
